I started off with a lesser known/mentioned (at least here in the states) city of Italy to mix it up a bit. Florence, Rome, Milan, and Naples are obviously a few places that most people desire to go, but Italy is clearly filled with beautiful and rich places throughout the country.
Cagliari is the capital city of Sardinia, with roughly 155,000 people. It has more traditionally “Italian” sights, a historical location of Italy, filled with the bustle of Italian residents.
~History of Cagliari~
Cagliari was occupied by the Romans in the Second Punic War (what’s that right??) which was between 218 and 201 BC. Because of this, the city is occupied by many Roman style buildings, including a Roman Amphitheater (pictured below).

The city was home to naval and airbases until they were destroyed by allied forces in World War II. The harbour was rebuilt to become a port.
~Top Places to Visit~
These are the most popular places to visit in Cagliari.
1. Cathedral of Santa Maria

A 14th century cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Tours can be booked in advance through Trip Advisor (I will place a link at the bottom). The Cagliari Easy Tour is $40.15, the Old Cagliari Tour is $22.94, and the Half Day Tour is $79.15.
2. San Benedetto Market
This market is the largest market in Italy and is one of the largest in Europe. According to trip advisor, tourists can leave the market having spent around $34. You obviously don’t have to buy anything, but that’s a general idea.
3. Museo Archeologico Nazionale

An archeological museum that houses many historical statues and ceramics. Trip advisor states that tourists can leave having spent around $44.
~Free Things To Do~
1. Poetto Beach

This is the cities main beach and it’s located about 10 miles outside of the city. If you don’t like crowds, I would avoid this one.
2. Sella Del Diavolo

This is a beautiful hike, in English meaning “The Devil’s Saddle.” Check out the crazy backstory that is believed about this location!
3. Sagra di Sant’Efisio

This is a four day long procession starting on the first of May. It’s in honor of the executed Sant’Efisio.
~Best Restaurants~
1. Antico Cafe 1855
This restaurant was established in 1855 (hence the name). Many important Italian figures would meet here to discuss affairs in the 19th and 20th centuries. The prices are mid-range to high.
2. Dal Corsaro
This is a mother-son run fine dining restaurant. The son cooks while the mother pairs the wine with the meals. It is also pricey but is known for being one of the best restaurants in the area.
3. Principi di Dan
Five founders put together this restaurant, each having separate skills (cooking, wine, archeology, culture, and tourism) based on the ideals of warriors called Sher-Dan that lived in Sardinia in ancient times. This isn’t as pricey as the last two, but still up there.
~Cheap Eats~
1. Il Merlo Parlante
Il Merlo Parlante, meaning “The Talking Blackbird” is a favorite of the locals and has wonderful music and a large selection of international beers.
2. Babeuf
Babeuf is a cafe and wine bar that gives off artsy and cultural vibes where you can have a cup of tea or a nice glass of wine.
3. Terrazze di Calamosca
Not much is written about this place but it is rated well. It over looks the sea and is very close to the beach.
Please comment if you have visited Cagliari and let us know of any tips or thoughts you have!
